Medway & South East Karate Clubs
UK Bushido Karate Association
& International Wado Federation
UK Bushido Grade Syllabus 2018
We only promote the Wado style of Karate. That is all we are qualified to teach.
There are numerous school s and styles. If a school claims to teach 'sport karate' be that Wado based or any other style based karate then, it is not a 'traditional style'
It may be be a perfectly reputable club, There are some very fine Freestyle clubs but, you should be aware of the distinction.
Techniques and Kata for Karate training
The blocks, punches, strikes & kicks that are shown and described here will give you a good start to your karate training. They are by no means the only techniques you will learn but with constant practise these techniques will give you a good base for your Karate regardless of style.
There will be many variations with the techniques that you learn, so don’t worry too much about what is right and what is wrong. Practice copying the techniques as you are shown. It is essential that you practice your basic techniques and Kata’s at all times.
You will be graded and asked to demonstrate the techniques that are described and shown in the grade syllabus. You will also be asked to demonstrate KATA (Forms) and Combinations (Renrakuwaza). Depending on your grade and the level you have reached you will also be expected to understand the Japanese terminology.
At the higher grade level you will be expected to help with the teaching. of newer students. You must have your techniques correct otherwise you will pass on bad habits so it follows that you must train hard and perfect your techniques at all time.
In most schools of karate the Japanese language is used to describe the techniques that you practise, wherever possible the commands given in class will also be in Japanese. Try and memorise the words that are written in this guide.
Take your time, practice counting from one to ten. Once you have mastered this then move on to the kicks, blocks and punches etc. Remember there is no hurry every one of us learns at a different speed so don’t be disillusioned if your progress is slower than others. Your karate training will develop your individual skills. It is the constant repetition that will commit your karate to memory.
Dojo etiquette
Bow on entering and leaving the Dojo.
Bow to your Instructor and to your fellow students.
Show respect to your Instructor and your fellow students. (If you lose respect for your Instructor it is time to move on)
Never indulge in horseplay or bullying behaviour. No eating and drinking in the Dojo.
Make sure your Karate GI is clean or wear appropriate clothing for training at all times.
Do not wear jewellery and rings when training they may cause injury to others. You will be asked to remove them.
Arrive in good time to train it shows a lack of respect to continually arrive late.
Be prepared to train. If you are not prepared to train or assist then please stay at home. Don't be a distraction..
JUNIOR GRADES
For Junior grades safety is paramount, no over extension of the limbs or joints should be allowed, special care should be taken when performing exercises, some children are naturally flexible, some are not. Special care should be taken to ensure that children do not overstretch.
No child should ever be permitted to perform push ups on their knuckles, when punching or kicking make sure they do not lock the joint out.

There are additional Kata that are practiced but not included in the current grade sylabus.
They include Rokyu Enpi, Superinpei, Seinchin, Seipai, Tensho. We have also included for training purposes only the Rohai Nidan & Sandan We are also looking at weapons forms.... Wado has traditionally included some weapons, Tanto (Kinife) Katana (sword) but we feel we want to bring these up to date and more relevant to today’s environment. This may take some time to research.
All prospective Dan grades must have shown an ability to teach and to lead by good example.
They must at all times seek to promote safe practice and a harmonious and friendly atmosphere both within the Dojo and outside.
Dan grade should not have to be asked to assist the club, they should do so automatically and willingly.
They should always help their fellow students to progress in any way they can.
They should constantly practice and refine their own technique and ensure that what they pass on to their fellow students is of the highest order both in training and advice.
A Dan grade should never stop training, evolving and exploring their technique and should always seek out advice from senior Instructors.
The Essentials of being a Black Belt
When you attain the Black Belt grade you become an ambassador for your club and for Karate, you are on show, everyone can see you and they can see any short comings in your attitude and performance, you cannot hide once you put the Black belt on.
Any person attaining a Dan Grade should never lose sight of the fact that they where once beginners. Conceit and arrogance of any kind is a luxury that no Karate student can afford to have. There is no place for inflated egos or conceit within the UK Bushido Karate Kai.
“A wise person never seeks confirmation of their abilities. Any fool can tell you what you would like to hear.”
